September 14, 2010 – Hour 2

Sobering statistics are set to be released this week that will show that the 2009 poverty level in America climbed to around 15%.  That means that 1 in 7 Americans is living beneath the poverty line.

In today’s show we take a look at the local implications of growing poverty with Brendan Walsh and Willa Bickham.  Over 40 years ago they co-founded Viva House, a Catholic Worker community and soup kitchen in West Baltimore, and they join us to discuss the daily challenges faced by the poor, and how they have worked to improve their community.
