Countdown to the Annapolis Summit: The Budget

Annapolis Summit (Credit: Maryland Daily Record)December 25, 2017 – The Battle over Budgets

In our newest Countdown to the Annapolis Summit podcast, we look at the issue of the Budget, which will be debated in the 2018 Maryland General Assembly.

As always, the budget looms as a crisis to be debated in Annapolis. Will the members of the legislature address the looming structural deficit of $1.2 Billion that is coming in the year 2022? How will they — or will they — pay for the billions of dollars for our schools it appears the Kirwin commission will suggest?  How much does the new federal tax plan affect Maryland’s citizens and our state budget?  What will the state legislature do?

Joining us are two State Senators, both of whom sit on the Budget and Taxation Committee: Washington County Republican Andrew A. Serafini, and Baltimore City Democrat Bill Ferguson.

The 15th Annual Annapolis Summit will be held on the Opening Day of the Maryland General Assembly, January 10, 2018, from 7:30-9:30am, at the Governor Calvert House in Annapolis. The event starts at 7:30am with a networking breakfast, and then beginning at 8:00 I will interview Governor Larry Hogan, President of the Senate Thomas V. ” Mike” Miller and Speaker of the House Michael Busch.

As part of our lead up to the Annapolis Summit, we are continuing to bring you issues that will be discussed and debated in the 2018 Maryland Legislative Session. Today we examine the many questions associated with Sports Betting. Should Maryland allow legal sports betting? If so, when? Should they be at casinos only or also at the racetracks? And where should the money go? Should it be dedicated to education? What about compulsive gamblers — is this one more venue for them to lose everything? We are joined by Delegate Frank Turner, Democrat representing Howard County, and Del. Jason Buckel, Republican representing Allegany County.

Countdown to the Annapolis Summit: Health Care

In our lead up to the Annapolis Summit, we are examining the hot button issue of Healthcare, which will be debated front and center once again, in the 2018 Maryland General Assembly. Should Maryland compensate for the repeal of the federal individual mandate shifting that mandate to the state? Some officials are looking to “re-insurance,” supported by the insurance industry. Will anything ensure coverage for all? And what about cost containment?

The debate is illustrated in this podcast by our two guests: Vincent DeMarco, President of the Maryland Citizens’ Health Initiative; and Baltimore County Republican Delegate Chris West.

The 15th annual Annapolis Summit will be held on January 10, 2018. As we countdown to the Summit we are covering issues that will be debated in the 2018 Maryland Legislative Session. One of those issues has been dubbed the “Beer Wars.” During the Session, Maryland Comptroller Peter Franchot will be entering a legislative initiative that would allow craft beer brewers to sell their beers without going through distributors. This is a complex issue that involves a number of factors including health and corporate control. Comptroller Franchot joined me in-studio first, and then I talked with Raimee Eck, the President of the Maryland Public Health Association.
