April 14, 2010 – Segment 1

Safe Streets is a violence prevention program in Baltimore modeled on Ceasefire Chicago.  Both here and in Chicago, the program has proved to be succesful in reducing violence in the neighborhoods where it is implemented.  The program’s funding was suspended earlier this week when a federal indictment raised questions about possible ties between Safe Streets and the Black Guerrilla Family gang.

Joining us this hour to discuss the work Safe Streets does is:

Sheryl Goldstein – Director of the Mayor’s Office on Criminal Justice

Gardnel Carter – Outreach Supervisor for Safe Streets in East Baltimore

Shane Taylor – Outreach Supervisor for Safe Streets of Cherry Hill

Daniel Webster – Associate Director of the Center for the Prevention of Yourth Violence at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health

Dante Wilson – Youth counselor and mediator

Ernest Smith – President of the McElderry Park Community Association
