  1. We call it “dog-whistling” in Australia – Roxanne – where politicians use key terms to speak to their particular constituency – the anti-immigrant, the racists, the anti-conservationists…! Thanks Marc for gathering this special group to discuss the Oregon Federal lands takeover. We can’t point fingers from Australia – here we have a Trump-style Federal LNP Government made up of those who demonise Indigenous peoples and control their lives and rights – not only in Federal Territories such as the Northern Territory (the so-called “Intervention”) – Darwin the capital – but with their State level party buddies – doing equally dreadful things at that level – especially in Western Australia – closing down remote communities where those who have maintained connections to their traditional “countries” will be forcibly moved away – so that – of course – the mining overseas-controlled companies will be able to move in and destroy the land, the creation stories features – without any oversight or negotiation – benefitting their political supporters – of course! Trump wants no one of Islamic background to be able to enter the US – Tony Abbott (immediate past Prime Minister) knocked from his perch by the present same party incumbent Malcolm Turnbull – and this PM too – and their various Immigration Ministers – have locked up thousands of mainly Islamic asylum-seeking refugees who have braved wide ocean crossings to save themselves and their families – in prisons/gaols on tiny Pacific Island countries – one lot on Manus Island (PNG) the others on Nauru (actually a failed state population only 10,000) where murders, torture, sexual abuse of young men, women and children of both sexes has taken place under the aegis of this government and its security service Australian company mates acting as gaolers and abusers – Wilsons and Transfield (nowadays like Halliburton post-Iraq – trying to disguise itself with a name change to BroadBand or some such trite term (BroadSpectrum, BroadLiars smell as bad). And the rape of the best farming land in the nation, of disrespect for First Nations/Indigenous peoples, with huge coal-mining operations and CSG fracking leases and government support for “foreign” “investment” going on right across the country – check out Gautam ADANI’s Indian company plans for Queensland which involve destruction of the World Heritage UNESCO Great Barrier Reef and Shenhua – the giant Chinese consortium digging up the NSW Liverpool Plains – and on and on – the litany of disrespect for human rights and the environment and First Nations peoples is unlike anything since the middle of the 20th century – let alone attacks on public education and public health and trade agreements making it easy for foreign corporations to sue if local laws make it difficult for them to rip out profits from this country – already secret rights to major corporations exist so that it is impossible to know if any taxes in fact are being paid here – while the PM warehouses millions of his wealth in George Town, Grand Cayman. Australia is on the nose! And all I meant to say Marc was thank-you. But injustice anywhere is injustice – you have it in the US – and it is going one here, too!
