2008 Presidential Election

Discuss!

Vice President

Okay kids, the primary season is FINALLY over!

Now, who is your pick for running mates for both Obama and McCain?

basketball analogy

Baltimore had a basketball team called the Baltimore Bullets many years ago. One year the Bullets played the New Yorks Knicks for their conference championship. Many thought those games were the best post-season series that year. I thought the Bullets and the Knicks were the two best NBA teams that year.

The Knicks won the conference championship, but lost the league championship series. I thought they lost the league finals because the conference finals had been so strenuous, so exhausting as to be debilitating, and their opponents were comparatively rested.

Will the eventual Dem nominee suffer an analogous result this year?

Thanks for the links, Jes. I will check them out.

Great New Yorker Article

"Seldom has a large corporation so heedlessly inflicted so much civic damage in such a short space of time."

That's a standout quote from the new issue of The New Yorker. The corporation they are referencing? ABC. And what did ABC do? According to the article, it established "...new benchmarks of degradation" during the most recent debate between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama last Wednesday.

Here's a link: http://www.newyorker.com/talk/comment/2008/04/28/080428taco_talk_hertzbe...

The article is a scathing critique of ABC and the performance of Charles Gibson and George Stephanopoulos as moderators. But I think we all know that the other news networks are doing the exact same things to this election. Did anyone see Jon Stewart mocking NBC for trying to say that Barack Obama flipped Hillary Clinton off? (Check it out--it is at the very end of this video http://www.thedailyshow.com/video/index.jhtml?videoId=166513&title=indec...)

What do you guys think about cable news and how it is handling the election? I hope you'll read the article, check out the video, and let me know what you think!

corporate news

This diary is one example of why organizations like CEM are so important.

Tall candidates

John Kerry was nominated because he was the tallest candidate in 2004. I'm positive I heard that on The Steiner Show!

Obama/Hillary debate

Did anyone watch the debate in Philadelphia? What did you think?

Obama/Hillary Debate

Nope didn't see that one.

I've watched the first 20 or so debates though, and I've figured out that American elections are truly popularity contests, & only the most popular folks remain in the race now.

For one, the media mainly focuses on personality issues and relatively little on real problems. When the candidates do get important questions regarding those problems they respond with standardized answers then surf quickly back to the fluff.

Reminds me a lot of the class president elections in junior high school.

The only problem with this ridiculously lengthy election season is we've seen so much of these popular candidates that...familarity breeds contempt.

The election season is two years long and by the time we'll decide who we want we won't want any of them...it's like if all your relatives showed up during holiday season and and didn't leave for a couple years.

Would you invite them back again?

true enough...

"familarity breeds contempt. "

How true!
But being as how we have to live with this person for four, maybe eight years--maybe it is good to get as much of a taste now for how it will be to have them on the front page each day!

Isn't it funny that this election was supposed to have been decided months ago?

every day

The importance of your comment is underestimated, I think. I don't know how many people make voting decisions on that basis, if any, but that thought is in my mind nearly every time I hear a candidate speak. Much as I admire and respect Senator Biden, I didn't want to listen to him every day.

Am I weird? Why is this never discussed?

I look forward to States of the Union being delivered by President Napolitano or President Sebelius someday. Meanwhile, that tall, skinny guy is very exciting.

hmmm...

That's interesting, Count. On the basis of him being the least boring/annoying/wearing is the last reason I would ever expect to find someone supporting Nader.

Oh, I'm just teasing! He's a very smart man and has a lot to say. I like Marc's assertion that we should remember him not as the man who made Gore lose but instead as the man who has saved more lives that anyone else through his safety advocacy.

I think the 2000 election was decided largely on the basis of “Who would you rather have a beer with?”

Are you still teasing?

I meant the other tall, skinny guy! (Barack Obama).

That's so funny!

Ooops, my bad!

But according to Google Ralph is two and a half inches taller than Obama--so you can understand my confusion!

Apparently, Clinton is 5'8'' and a half. That is REALLY tall for a woman.

This is interesting. When I googled "How tall is Ralph Nader", "How tall is Hillary Clinton" and "How tall is John McCain" only McCain's height didn't pop up at once.

I found two sources that said he is 5'7''-which would make him an inch and a half shorter than Hillary Clinton. But I have found a couple of pictures of them standing next to each other, and he looks a bit taller. Hmm...something fishy is going on here.

Why does it matter? Well don't you know that 59% percent of the time, the taller candidate wins?  Could McCain have begun wearing lifts in his shoes a few years ago when he assumed he would be facing off against the inevitable Hillary Clinton in the general election?

Maybe I should go work for cable news....;D

I am weird.

I find that wiki article extraordinarily interesting.

Nah, don't go to cable news.
